Who these terms are between

Mimic is made and operated by Greg Wolny, a sole proprietor in California, United States ("we", "us"). These terms apply to you when you use the Mimic iPhone app or the Community Library. If you do not agree with them, please do not use Mimic.

These terms sit alongside the licence that governs the app itself. Mimic is distributed under Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement, which covers your licence to install and run the software. The terms on this page cover how you may use Mimic and the Community Library. Where the two genuinely conflict on the subject of the software licence, Apple's agreement governs.

Cloning a voice: consent is the rule

Mimic can build a voice from a short recording. Whose voice you may record is not a technical question, and the app cannot check it for you, so it is stated plainly here:

• Your own voice — always fine.
• Somebody else's voice — only with their clear, informed and current permission, given by someone able to give it. Permission for one purpose is not permission for every purpose.
• A child's voice — only if you are their parent or legal guardian, or have that person's permission.
• A public figure, performer, or a voice from a recording you did not make — a voice being easy to obtain is not permission to clone it. Many jurisdictions protect a person's voice as part of their likeness, separately from any copyright in the recording.

Mimic asks you to acknowledge this once before it will record a voice sample. That acknowledgement is a reminder, not a transfer of responsibility: you remain responsible for every voice you create and for what you do with it.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use Mimic, or anything you make with it, to:

• impersonate a real person without their consent, or pass off generated audio as a genuine recording of someone;
• deceive or defraud anyone — including any use in a scam, a fake authorisation, a "distressed relative" call, or to defeat voice-based identity checks;
• harass, bully, threaten, degrade or intimidate any person;
• produce sexual content involving a real person without their consent, or any sexual content involving a minor;
• produce content that promotes violence or hatred against people on the basis of who they are;
• infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, publicity, privacy or other rights;
• break any law that applies to you, including laws on synthetic media, election communications, recording consent, and the right of publicity;
• attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer or abuse the Community Library service or its moderation, including evading a block or a takedown.

Some jurisdictions require synthetic or AI-generated audio to be disclosed as such, particularly in political, commercial or news contexts. Complying with that is your responsibility.

The Community Library

The Community Library is an optional, moderated space where people share voices they made. You never have to use it, and Mimic works fully without it.

What publishing sends, and what it does not

When you publish, Mimic sends the voice's mathematical voice print, plus the name, description and picture you chose. Your recordings are never sent, and there is no way for anyone to hear your original sample. The privacy policy describes this in full.

What you promise when you publish

By publishing a voice you confirm that it is yours to share — that it is your own voice, or that you have permission from the person whose voice it is — and that the name, description and picture you attached are yours to use and are suitable for a general audience. Mimic asks you to confirm this on a separate screen before the voice is sent.

What you grant us, and what you keep

You keep ownership of what you make. Publishing grants us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, display and distribute that voice print, name, description and picture within Mimic, and to let other Mimic users add the voice to their own app and perform with it. That licence exists only so the library can function, and it ends when the voice is removed — except for copies already downloaded to other people's devices, which we have no way to reach.

Moderation, reporting and removal

• Nothing appears automatically. Every submission is reviewed by hand before anyone can see it.
• Anyone can report a voice from inside the app. Reported voices are hidden automatically once enough reports arrive, pending review.
• You can unpublish your own voice at any time. It disappears from the library; copies other people already added remain on their devices.
• You can block a creator from inside the app, which hides everything of theirs from you, including anything they publish later.
• We may remove any voice and refuse service where these terms are broken, where the law requires it, or where a voice is reported and we judge it does not belong in the library. Serious or repeated breaches may mean we stop accepting submissions from that creator.

To report something outside the app, or to raise a rights claim about a published voice, email gwolny@me.com with enough detail to identify the voice.

Publishing permanently unlocks that voice for you

Publishing a voice unlocks it for your own unlimited use, forever, at no cost. That unlock is permanent and cannot be taken back — not by unpublishing the voice later, and not by us. It is deliberate: you gave something to the library, and the library does not take it back.

Free tier, Mimic Pro and payment

Mimic is free to download. The six built-in voice effects, Performer Mode and your recordings are unlimited on the free tier, and cloning your own voice is free. Voices you do not own — the eight designer voices and voices from the Community Library — are metered on the free tier so you can hear what you would be buying.

Mimic Pro is available as an auto-renewing monthly subscription, which begins with a 3-day free trial, or as a one-time lifetime purchase. All payments are processed by Apple, not by us: a subscription renews unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends, is managed in the Subscriptions section of your Apple Account in iOS Settings, and refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Current prices are shown in the App Store and on the in-app upgrade screen. We may change prices for future purchases; a change never alters what you already bought.

Ranks, medals and streaks

Mimic keeps a record of what you have made and collected, and turns it into points, ranks, streaks and medals. This is a bit of fun, kept on your own iPhone. It has no cash value, cannot be transferred, bought or sold, and can be reset or changed as the app develops. Deleting the app clears it.

Your content, and things we cannot promise

Mimic stores your recordings, voices and takes on your device. Keeping backups is up to you — deleting the app deletes them, and we have no copy to restore. Export anything you want to keep, or rely on an iCloud device backup.

Mimic is provided "as is". Voice cloning is an imperfect, probabilistic technology: we do not promise that a clone will sound like its source, that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that the Community Library will always be available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude implied warranties, and our total liability to you for any claim relating to Mimic is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and if you are a consumer you keep any rights your local law gives you.

Age

Mimic is rated for a general audience, but it is not directed at children under 13 and you should not use it if you are under 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use Mimic only with a parent or guardian's involvement.

Changes, and ending your use

You can stop using Mimic at any time by deleting the app; unpublish any voices you no longer want in the library first. We may update these terms as Mimic changes — we will bump the effective date above, and surface material changes in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use Mimic after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.
